In the era of well-aging, many people are choosing medical aesthetic procedures to enhance their happiness. By embracing aging naturally and selecting treatments that suit them, they regain confidence and continue to live boldly without feeling diminished by age. Recently, an international academic conference presented research findings reflecting this trend, drawing significant attention from both academia and industry.

■Clear Psychological Benefits of Aesthetic Procedures

Last month, Merz Aesthetics(hereafter Merz) presented groundbreaking research at the world's largest beauty and plastic surgery conference, IMCAS World Congress 2025, in Paris. The study, "The Source of Confidence: Global Insights on Aesthetics and Self-Assurance," was conducted across 15 countries with 15,000 adults aged 21 to 75. It was the first global report to highlight the socio-psychological effects of medical aesthetic treatments.

According to the study, 67% of respondents acknowledged aging as a natural part of life, while 66% stated that they undergo aesthetic procedures to manage the aging process effectively. Additionally, 79% of respondents preferred natural-looking results in their aesthetic treatments.

The most noteworthy aspect of the study is its psychological benefits. The results showed that medical aesthetics provided individuals with feelings of satisfaction (82%), motivation for self-care (82%), resilience (78%), confidence (73%), and a willingness to embrace new experiences (69%). Additionally, 74% of respondents believed that building self-confidence is essential for happiness in life. In comparison, 72% stated that aesthetic procedures changed their perception of themselves, and 66% reported that these treatments influenced their outlook on life.

M.D. Shannon Humphrey, a dermatologist from Canada who participated in the study, stated, "Medical aesthetics is no longer just about superficial appearance enhancement; it has become an integral part of consistent self-care." She emphasized the significance of this research, highlighting that it specifically sheds light on the psychological benefits of medical aesthetics, particularly in boosting self-confidence.

■Careful Consideration of Consumers' Inner Well-being

Meanwhile, this study also highlighted the efforts needed from medical professionals in South Korea. Compared to other countries, Korean medical consumers showed significantly lower confidence and were more hesitant to discuss medical aesthetics with others.

According to the study, "Do you feel confident when looking in the mirror?" the global average across 15 countries was 54%, while South Korea recorded only 28%. Additionally, when asked, "Do you feel comfortable discussing medical aesthetics with others?" the global average was 56%, with 63% in other Asian countries. However, in South Korea, only 43% responded positively.

Dr. JeYoung Park, the director of Apgujeong Oracle Dermatology Clinic, who attended the expert discussion as South Korea's representative, emphasized, "We must move beyond consultations focused solely on appearance enhancement and carefully consider patients' inner well-being. It is essential to guide them toward the most suitable procedures that align with their current stage of life."

Of course, efforts from medical consumers are also necessary. Experts unanimously emphasize the importance of choosing a physician with whom they can discuss their aging management in the long term. The ultimate goal of medical aesthetics is not dramatic changes in appearance but maintaining a healthy and vibrant look over time.

TIP: Essential Things to Keep in Mind When Undergoing Medical Aesthetic Procedures!

1.Choose a doctor with whom you can discuss long-term aging care.

2. Receive treatments consistently at the same clinic whenever possible (if changing clinics, provide accurate treatment history).

3. Communicate openly about your psychological state, including the life changes you expect from the procedure.

4. Follow the appropriate treatment intervals to prevent resistance or diminished effects.
