· Strategies to survive as a primary and secondary hospital: strengthening their capabilities, such as expanding the treatment fields.

Ja-seong, Vice President of Eunsung Medical Foundation, stated, "We will provide high-quality medical services and engage in social contribution activities for the sustainable growth of hospitals."
Medical Foundation, which was founded in 1978 in Dong-gu, Busan, and has grown into a regional representative medical institution, has its origin of Gu jeong-hoe Orthopedic Surgery and Moon hwa-Sook Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinic. As of June this year, the Foundation, with 3020 beds in operation, has established a total of 11 'good hospitals' networks, including five acute general hospitals in Busan, Ulsan, and Pohang and six rehabilitation and nursing hospitals.

more than 40 years, the Eunsung Medical Foundation, which is renowned nationwide, has served as a professional training institute for medical personnel to promote the local community's health. In particular, the five general hospitals - Good Culture Moonhwa Hospital, Good Samseon Samsun Hospital, Good Gang-an Hospital (Busan), Good Samjeong Hospital (Ulsan), and Good Sunlin Hospital (Pohang) - are taking the lead in various social contribution activities by providing high-quality medical services while representing each region.

Ja-seong, Vice President of Eunsung Medical Foundation, voiced, "Having worked with the region for over 40 years, we built our confidence that we must carry out meaningful community contribution activities." He emphasized that providing high-quality medical services and social benefaction are essential for hospitals to achieve sustainable growth.

"vaccinations per day... Need for government support measures”

Explains that the on-site conditions under the Eunsung Medical Foundation are also not favorable, while the medical industry is suffering overall due to COVID-19. He agrees that private medical institutions should actively take on public medical functions such as screening, respiratory safety control, and vaccinations in order to overcome the current national crisis. However, he also complaines that all hospital members are extremely fatigued because of the prolonged parallel period between existing treatment and consignment treatment for COVID-19 without additional human resources support.

The number of vaccinations per day at five general hospitals under the Eunsung Medical Foundation is approximately 2,000. All staff, including doctors, nurses, and administrative, are performing their best to meet these needs, but we are still running short of staff. So we have to hire and operate part-time workers on our own. Vice-Chairman Koo Ja-seong appeals that active, realistic support measures are urgently required in preparation for the prolonged COVID-19 outbreak.

Who is currently in charge of treatment and foundation management, has a somewhat impressive background as a doctor, such as a Wharton School MBA and McKinsey Management Consultant. He also says that his youth as a doctor seems to be unique.

Acquiring a license as an obstetrician and gynecologist, he moved to the United States after serving in the military. He aspired to become a professional who was proficient at both medical and management. He first earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania but still had regrets and shortcomings that he couldn't understand.

-McKinsey consultant is a very unusual career as a doctor.

Got an MBA in the US, but I didn't feel like I perfectly understood business. So I decided to accept the job as a consultant at McKinsey, a global management consulting firm. I repeated the process of presenting solutions while intensely researching and discussing various management issues that customers are struggling with. I believe that the comprehensive field experience at McKinsey is still advantageous. Through the experience at the time, I was able to have the essential thinking ability to diagnose and solve problems. Above all, it was a time when I was able to engrave in my heart the value of management; it is all about the maximization of customer value, not merely about profit creation.

-Are running a foundation of 11 hospitals along with medical treatment. What is the most challenging thing?

Course, it's not easy. However, treatment and management are by no means separate domains. Treatment is at the forefront of hospital management because directly facing the customers and the patients and listening to their stories are directly related to administration and leadership. Possibly the treatment itself is a part of management. In particular, while participating in hospital management, I always need to maximize customer value, so I inevitably extend this mindset to the medical field. Also, as a doctor, I assume all doctors should avoid uniform treatment. So I always strive to provide the best personalized remedy for my patients.

Ja-seong, Vice President of Eunsung Medical Foundation, says that although the domestic fertility rate is rapidly decreasing, fertility procedures continue to increase. In line with this, the fertility center will develop to provide the best medical services to patients.
-Heard that you, as an obstetrician and gynecologist, are focusing on infertility treatment.

Deciding to return to the hospital, I recognized that the future of obstetrics and gynecology depended on infertility treatment. Thus, I went to Osaka Namba Clinic, Japan's 2nd largest fertility hospital, and Tokyo Gatoclinic for training. I joined Good Culture Hospital in 2012, opened a fertility center, and went through two expansions to get an up-to-date look.

-Is the current trend of fertility treatment?

Irony is that the current fertility rate in Korea is rapidly declining, but fertility surgery continues to increase. I assume that the most significant cause is that marriage age is getting older. Since in infertility, fertilized egg culture technology is as essential as a doctor's ability, we are also concentrating on investment in facilities and equipment to have the best technology. We plan to expand the fertility center once again soon.

-Culture Moonhwa Hospital is also famous as a women's hospital focusing on obstetrics and gynecology.

Hospital, with 17 obstetricians and gynecologists, is the largest in the region. In order to cope with rapidly changing medical needs such as severe low birthrate, we try to foster infertility centers and gynecological surgery centers by maintaining a specialized childbirth center and neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) with obstetricians and gynecologists 24 hours a day. We have established a women's cancer center by actively recruiting medical staff from university hospitals so that patients with common female cancers, such as thyroid and breast cancer, receive treatments without going to a university hospital. Starting this year, we newly opened the Gastrointestinal Surgery Center, which provides emergency abdominal surgery 24 hours a day. This diversified expansion of the medical fields promoted our hospitals to grow every year, despite the decline in the birth rate.

-Is the current focus of the Eunsung Medical Foundation?

Looking forward to the next ten years, I believe that the most critical areas to focus on are cancer, brain, and cardiovascular diseases. As the aging population progresses, the prevalence of these two diseases inevitably increases. Good Gang-an Hospital, the largest hospital in the Eunsung Medical Foundation, opened a cancer center in an independent building as a countermeasure against cancer. By opening the Department of Hematology and Oncology, Therapeutic Radiology, and Nuclear Medicine, we established a system in which cancer patients in the region could receive treatment comfortably. In addition, in our pancreatic transplant surgery center, we are actively performing liver transplantation which was implemented only in some university hospitals. Good Samseon Sam-sun Hospital is also investing profoundly in specialized cerebrovascular centers and cardiovascular centers.

-You have any recommendations for the local primary and secondary hospitals?

Local primary and secondary hospitals need to be equipped with technology and service capabilities by gradually expanding their treatment areas so that they can embrace all patients who do not necessarily go to university hospitals. I know some small and medium-sized hospitals already outperform university hospitals in infertility treatment, benign tumors, minimally invasive treatment for early cancer and artificial joint surgery. These strengthened abilities of primary and secondary hospitals would enable patients to secure medical services more quickly and affordably. Eventually, the entire national medical system will be operated more efficiently.

Year, Vice-Chairman Koo Ja-seong added social contribution activities to help multicultural families. He established a support budget to ensure that the growing number of local multicultural families was not marginalized in the medical and education sectors. He spoke out that he always considered what kind of aid they needed whenever he inaugurated a business. He would continue to carry out support projects that were essential for the underprivileged.
