In the "2026 World's Best Hospitals" ranking published by the American newsmagazine Newsweek together with the market research firm Statista, Asan Medical Center ranked 25th in the world (1st in Korea) and Samsung Medical Center ranked 26th (2nd in Korea), both placing among the world's elite. Severance Hospital (39th) and Seoul National University Hospital (41st) followed, with these institutions — commonly grouped with Seoul National University Bundang Hospital as Korea's "Big 5" — demonstrating strong global competitiveness. Gangnam Severance Hospital also ranked near the top 100 worldwide, reflecting its strong treatment capabilities.

■Top Global Rankings by Specialty: Korea Dominates in Serious-Illness Care

In a separate Newsweek evaluation, "Asia-Pacific's Best Specialized Hospitals 2026," Korean hospitals' strength in serious-illness care stood out even more. Asan Medical Center ranked first in the Asia-Pacific in five specialties — cardiology, cardiac surgery, neurology, endocrinology, and orthopedics — and second in oncology, pulmonology, and gastroenterology. Samsung Medical Center ranked first in oncology, pulmonology, and gastroenterology, while Seoul National University Hospital ranked first in pediatrics for the Asia-Pacific region. In effect, Korean hospitals swept first place in nine of the ten specialty categories evaluated across the Asia-Pacific.

The tertiary and general hospitals on this list operate specialized infrastructure for serious illness — dedicated cancer centers, cardiovascular centers, robotic surgery centers — alongside precision health-checkup programs, all under one roof. Through their international clinics, foreign patients receive "one-stop fast-track" support spanning pre-arrival consultation, admission and surgery, and post-departure follow-up care.

The list also includes general hospitals specializing in areas such as joint and spine care, women's health, neurology, and nuclear medicine, giving overseas patients the option to choose the treatment best suited to their condition.
