Wear a Hanbok, Leave Prettier: Seoul's Downtown Medical Tourism Boom

Foreign patients are increasingly skipping Gangnam for clinics in Jongno, Myeongdong, and Seocho — pairing palace visits and shopping with quick cosmetic treatments in what's now called a "skincation."

Near Jongno 3-ga Station, Lumiere Plastic Surgery sits within a few subway stops of Gyeongbokgung Palace, Jongmyo Shrine, and the UNESCO-listed rear garden of Changdeokgung. Foreign patients increasingly favor low-downtime treatments — fillers, Botox, laser lifting — that let them return to sightseeing the same day, making Myeongdong a convenient base for a quick beauty stop between shopping and a walk up Namsan.

■Seocho: A Surgery Belt Sharing Gangnam's Infrastructure

Six clinics — Pixellab, Wonderful, Honestie, Verygood, Kirin, and Note Plastic Surgery — sit in Seocho-gu, separated from Gangnam's medical cluster only by Gangnam-daero and Seocho-daero. According to Korea's Ministry of Health and Welfare, the patient base has shifted well beyond the traditional China-Japan majority. Southeast Asia is growing fastest: patients from Indonesia rose 104.6% and Malaysia 106.8%, while plastic surgery visits from Singaporean patients jumped 280.1% year over year. As patient nationalities and cultures diversify, demand is growing for "downtown-linked" medical tourism that goes beyond treatment to include Seoul's palaces, markets, and shopping districts.
