Recently, there has been a sharp increase in respiratory infection cases in China. Among them, Human Metapneumovirus(HMPV), a virus that causes respiratory illnesses, has drawn significant attention in South Korea due to its similarities to the early outbreak patterns of COVID-19.

Human Metapneumovirus is a type of respiratory virus originating from avian metapneumovirus. While it remains relatively unfamiliar in South Korea, it is a common seasonal virus worldwide. Although it has not yet reached epidemic levels domestically, cases have risen over the past four weeks.

In the early stages, Human Metapneumovirus may present with little to no symptoms or start with mild nasal discharge. It can then progress to symptoms similar to the common cold, including fever, cough, phlegm, runny nose, and nasal congestion. In severe cases, it can lead to bronchitis or pneumonia.

The virus is generally transmitted through airborne particles, contact with infected objects, or direct human contact, and it has an incubation period of approximately 4 to 6 days. It has been reported to cause respiratory infections more easily in immunocompromised individuals, particularly young children and the elderly. Additionally, HMPV can spread through droplet transmission and indirect transmission via contaminated surfaces or bodily secretions from infected individuals.

Currently, no specific antiviral treatments are available for Human Metapneumovirus. Professor Hyunyoung Shin from the Department of Family Medicine at Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital, Catholic University of Korea, stated, “Rather than a specialized treatment, symptom management with fever reducers and cold symptom relievers is recommended. In severe cases, hospitalization may be necessary.”

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency(KDCA) has warned that Human Metapneumovirus cases are rising alongside influenza, emphasizing the need for continued vigilance. They stressed the importance of following basic respiratory infection prevention measures, including washing hands before and after going out, practicing proper cough etiquette, wearing a mask when experiencing respiratory symptoms, and ventilating indoor spaces for at least 10 minutes every two hours. Additionally, they urged strict adherence to infection control guidelines in childcare facilities and other group settings to prevent outbreaks, calling for thorough preventive measures.
