The medical paradigm has shifted from treatment to prevention and management. In line with this, hospitals, which have primarily provided medical services until now, have newly positioned themselves as key players in research and development for disease prevention and management. Major advanced countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom are already jointly implementing policy initiatives to strengthen the research roles of governments and hospitals.
To promote research and development and technology commercialization in the biohealth sector, the South Korean government introduced the Research-driven Hospital initiative in 2013. In 2024, the law was revised to foster a research culture in hospitals, transitioning from a designation system to a certification system applied to hospitals with proven research capabilities, announcing 21 Research-driven Hospitals. This article covers the selection process and future directions of Research-driven Hospitals.

We met with Lee Hak-jong, Director of the Biomedical Research Institute at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, which was recently certified as a Research-driven Hospitals, to discuss its achievements, vision, and future challenges as such. He plays a pivotal role in realizing the hospital’s vision.
- The importance of Research-driven Hospitals is being emphasized.
Hospitals are equipped with an optimal environment to observe patients’ needs and responses in real-time, analyze disease patterns through accumulated clinical data, and derive personalized treatment methods. In particular, they can comprehensively conduct full-cycle research, from basic research to translational and clinical research. Hospitals can go beyond mere treatment institutions to become platforms that drive innovation across the entire healthcare sector.
- What are the ultimate goals and vision?
The goal is not merely accumulating research outcomes but creating a structure that tangibly contributes to public health. Seoul National University Bundang Hospital has set its vision as “a Research-driven Hospital for the public, leading future medicine and the health industry.” It is actively pursuing research and development integrated with future technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), precision medicine, and digital healthcare while building a sustainable research ecosystem and healthcare innovation model.
- How is the hospital collaborating with the industry?
Seoul National University Bundang Hospital has established the “Healthcare Innovation Park,” the first hospital-centered bio-cluster in South Korea, and a unique research ecosystem where hospitals, industry, and research institutions collaborate in a single space. The entire process at the Healthcare Innovation Park—from idea generation to basic and clinical research, technology validation, and commercialization—is organically connected.
- What are the significant research achievements so far?
The AI-based precision medicine technology development project, “Doctor Answer 2.0,” is a key achievement. Through this, medical data for 12 diseases, including gastric cancer and depression, were secured, leading to the development of 24 types of medical AI software. Its significance lies in establishing a foundation for practical use in clinical settings through clinical validation. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the “Ji Seok-young Biomedical Research Institute” played a critical role in vaccine research by conducting animal testing for major vaccine candidates and obtaining international certification.
- What are the mid-to-long-term goals and plans?
The core goal is to establish a virtuous R&D cycle through early commercialization of research outcomes and reinvestment of profits. To this end, the hospital is enhancing its overall research governance and refining its research outcome management system. Moving forward, it plans to focus on core areas of future medicine, such as precision medicine, AI, and bio-convergence technologies, to improve public health and increase the industrial value of medical technologies. Additionally, by leveraging collaboration with nearby regions such as Pangyo and Gwanggyo, the hospital aims to expand its role as a hub for the healthcare industry and strengthen international collaborative research to leap forward as a globally competitive Research-driven Hospitals.
